About Letitia A. James
Letitia A. James has been New York's attorney general since 2019 after winning the office in 2018, becoming the first woman elected to it. She was born and raised in Brooklyn and graduated from Lehman College and Howard University School of Law. She began her career as a public defender with the Legal Aid Society and later headed the attorney general's Brooklyn regional office. She represented Brooklyn's 35th District on the New York City Council for 10 years and was elected New York City public advocate in 2013. Her official biography says her office has secured more than $9 billion from people and companies, including more than $3 billion from opioid makers and distributors. Her campaign says her focus is lowering costs for working families, holding those who break state laws accountable and protecting residents' rights and safety, and it notes her lawsuits challenging federal actions.
