Inmate indicted in Gouverneur prison homicide case

A St. Lawrence County grand jury has indicted Savon O’Neal, 32, on a second-degree assault charge in connection with the death of another inmate at Gouverneur Correctional Facility, the provided report said.

State police said O’Neal and his cellmate, Shaun Bennett, 45, were involved in a fight in April. Corrections officers found Bennett on the floor of his cell, and he later died after becoming unresponsive. Police said the death was ruled a homicide and attributed to cardiorespiratory arrest caused by a closed head injury. O’Neal was treated at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for injuries described as non-life-threatening.
