North Country Community College has received a SUNY Outdoors for All grant that will support the conversion of an existing outdoor classroom into an accessible space for student activities. The project is intended to allow students with different mobility levels to participate in gatherings and events.
The college, based in Saranac Lake with campuses in Malone and Ticonderoga, plans to use the space for activities including open-mic nights, art exhibits and other student events. The grant is part of a SUNY program supporting outdoor programming, improvements to outdoor spaces, accessibility and equipment for outdoor activities.
The Outdoors for All program launched in 2025 with grants of $8,000 to 13 SUNY campuses. Previous North Country recipients included SUNY Adirondack, SUNY Canton and SUNY Plattsburgh, which used grants for an accessible outdoor classroom, an outdoor gear library and skills programs, and trail signage, respectively.
Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh also received a grant in the latest round and plans to add Adirondack chairs for outdoor seating. NCCC's Saranac Lake campus is in the Adirondack Park, and the college serves students in Franklin and Essex counties.
NCCC has not announced a construction schedule or opening date for the accessible hub. The college can be contacted at 23 Santanoni Ave., Saranac Lake, NY 12983, or at (518) 891-2915 and 888-TRY-NCCC. SUNY's grant announcement is available through its Outdoors for All grant release.
