Proposed U.S.-Canada deal would lower some metals tariffs to 25%

A tentative trade agreement under discussion would reduce U.S. tariffs on certain Canadian steel and aluminum exports to 25%, from the current 50% rate. The proposal would not necessarily apply to every product, and different rates could be used for some goods made with those metals.

The details of the broader agreement were still being negotiated. President Donald Trump had paused planned 50% tariffs on billions of dollars in Canadian goods for three days while the talks continued. Canada is the largest source of U.S. aluminum imports, and imported Canadian aluminum accounts for about half of U.S. consumption.
