Red and Black set to play for NFA title Saturday after league suspends 13 players

The Watertown Red and Black are scheduled to play at the Southern Tier Stallions for the Northeastern Football Alliance championship at 5 p.m. Saturday. The game follows a weekend playoff matchup against the 716 Wildcats that officials ended early after a fight involving players from both teams, with Watertown ahead 10-0 and about four and a half minutes left on the clock.

In a release issued Tuesday, the NFA said the game was called early because of the severity of what happened on the field and condemned the conduct involved. The league said it has opened an investigation that includes a review of game footage, sideline recordings and reports from the officiating crew, and that disciplinary action will follow once that review is complete. The NFA suspended 13 players from the game, six of them from Watertown. Three players were suspended indefinitely. Watertown is in its third season in the league and finished the regular season in second place. The Wildcats, based in Lockport, won the league's AAA Division title last year.
