Seven New York law enforcement agencies remain listed on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website as having 287(g) agreements, despite state officials saying local agencies must end those arrangements under a new law. The agencies are in Broome, Cattaraugus, Nassau, Niagara, Rensselaer and Steuben counties, along with the Nassau County Police Department.
The state has given agencies until Aug. 25 to dissolve the agreements. Madison County recently ended its agreement, while Broome County Sheriff’s Department officials said the department is not housing federal detainees and will follow state law. ICE monthly reports listed one New York encounter in May, June and July, involving two people in Cattaraugus County on June 5. One was charged with grand larceny and scheme to defraud after allegedly seeking $50,000 from an elderly victim; the other was not criminally charged.
