St. Lawrence County ICE agreement status remains unclear under new state law

A new New York law prohibits law enforcement agencies from entering into certain agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The law also requires agencies with existing agreements to end them by Aug. 25, according to information from the state attorney general’s office.

St. Lawrence County legislators previously approved the sheriff’s office entering a 287(g) agreement that would have allowed the county jail to use a federal database to check whether inmates were wanted by federal authorities. The attorney general’s office said none of the 12 notices sent to agencies with such agreements was addressed to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office. It remains unclear whether the sheriff’s office ever finalized an agreement.
