New York Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa visited Watertown High School on a Tuesday for discussions about educating a large military-connected population, supporting students at risk of leaving school and preparing students for future technology jobs.
The meeting brought together school superintendents and other education leaders from Jefferson and Lewis counties, Fort Drum officials and additional community representatives. The discussions lasted more than four hours.
Watertown educators highlighted a nontraditional program for students at risk of dropping out and technology instruction intended to help prepare students for workforce needs connected to Micron Technology’s planned operations in Onondaga County.
Micron-supported classes in Watertown are in their third year. The company provides curriculum and materials, and high school students learn to build electrical circuits and use them to create light.
Military-family education was another focus. Students who live off Fort Drum attend school in the town or district where they live. The Watertown City School District lists resources for military families that include the Military Interstate Compact, Impact Aid and a Fort Drum school liaison. Fort Drum is home to the Army’s 10th Mountain Division.
Rosa oversees more than 700 school districts statewide. The Board of Regents appointed her permanent education commissioner on Feb. 8, 2021. Watertown High School serves students in grades 9 through 12. Larry Schmiegel became Watertown’s superintendent in May 2023.
The district and the state education department can provide updates about any follow-up to the visit. Information from the New York State Education Department is available through its commissioner page, while military-family resources are listed on the Watertown City School District’s website.
