Watertown council weighs four fixes for Pawling Street water main

Watertown City Council members were given four possible fixes Monday for the discolored water that residents of Pawling Street have reported for years, according to a report published by Yahoo News. Residents on the dead-end street have said they have had to buy bottled water for drinking and cooking, and have complained to the city repeatedly.

The options presented range in cost from $128,300 to $208,980. The least expensive would extend the Pawling Street water main and tie it into the main on Gotham Street. Two other options would also involve work on Moffett Street, at costs of $207,520 and $208,980, while a fourth would extend both the Moffett Street and Pawling Street mains to South Hamilton Street for $159,500. City Engineer Tom Compo said the first option would be the simplest, the report said, and that construction could begin next year. Any water main work requires approval from the state Department of Health, and Compo said he would discuss the project with the department. Water Superintendent Aaron Harvill pointed to buildup at the dead end of the line, and Councilman Benjamin P. Shoen said he had concerns about water main breaks if the city connects to the Gotham Street pipe.
