Watertown water and sewer funds reported to owe $2.2 million

Interim Town of Watertown Supervisor Jim Wright said the town’s water and sewer funds owe $2.2 million to the general fund. He said the water and sewer district is intended to fund itself, and that the debt would eventually need to be repaid through system users.

The town is subject to a state audit requested by some town lawmakers. Wright said he found seven or eight checkbooks, inconsistent figures and manual bookkeeping. He expects the audit to examine the fund transfers and issues identified in state audits from 2003 and 2010 that he said were not addressed.
